Playing TFT on a MacBook Pro: what the 14 and 16-inch screen adds

A 14 or 16-inch MacBook Pro costs a lot more than a MacBook Air, so the question comes up with every purchase: does Teamfight Tactics get anything out of it? The honest answer splits in two. On raw compute, no. Riot’s auto-battler asks almost nothing of an Apple Silicon chip, and an entry-level M1 runs it without breaking a sweat. On the display and on how the machine holds up over a long session, yes, and you notice it on day one. One thing first, because it sets up everything else: since patch 18.1, macOS is no longer supported by Teamfight Tactics. The big jump isn’t Pro versus Air, it’s leaving a six-inch phone
Before comparing two MacBooks, it helps to size up the step that came before. Most players who arrive on Mac come from a phone, and going from six inches to fourteen dwarfs anything that separates an Air from a Pro. A game of TFT means eight boards to scout, a bench, a five-unit shop, a trait panel and an item list. On six inches, all of that is consulted by pinching and zooming, one piece at a time. On fourteen, the same game sits on screen at once: your board, the shop and the traits, with no view switching at all.
That is what makes the Air-versus-Pro comparison less dramatic than it sounds: the MacBook Air already delivers most of the comfort. The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro adds three specific things, and they do not carry equal weight: a different panel, a variable refresh rate, and fans.
ProMotion and its 120 Hz: what a turn-based game does with it
The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro ship with a ProMotion display whose refresh rate adapts up to 120 Hz, while the MacBook Air sits at a fixed 60 Hz. In a shooter, that gap turns into a competitive edge. In TFT, it does not: nothing is won by seeing a frame a fraction of a second earlier, because decisions are made in seconds and combat resolves without you. What 120 Hz gives you is real, but it belongs to a different category: visual comfort.
- Where you see it: scrolling the shop and the item list, the carousel moving, dragging a unit from the bench onto the board, interface animations between rounds.
- Where it changes nothing: the combat phase, which you watch; reaction time, which is never the limiting factor in an auto-battler; your rank, which knows nothing about your display.
- A useful side effect: a variable refresh rate also drops very low when the image is static. A board in the planning phase barely moves, so the panel is not refreshing a still image a hundred and twenty times a second.

The mini-LED panel, or why the board reads better at night
The second gap is the panel technology. The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro uses a zoned mini-LED backlight, what Apple calls Liquid Retina XDR: deep blacks, high contrast, and more brightness on tap than an Air’s display. TFT arenas are frequently dark, and the useful information on them is small: health bars, star levels, item icons sitting on units a few dozen pixels tall.
Two situations change in practice. At night, in a dimly lit room, the dark parts of the board stop washing out to grey and the icons stand out. In daylight, next to a window, the brightness headroom keeps you from playing on a faded board. None of this is a blocker on a MacBook Air, which has a perfectly good screen. The difference belongs to the comfort of a two-hour session, not to performance.
The notch, full screen and the menu bar
This is the 14 and 16-inch quirk that worries buyers most: the camera notch parked in the middle of the menu bar. In game, it never eats into the board. When an app goes full screen, macOS hides the menu bar and places the image of apps that are not notch-aware below the camera area: the strip around the notch stays black, and the game takes everything else. The board, the shop and the buttons are never covered.
Two things are worth knowing. In an app’s Get Info panel (right-click, then Get Info), macOS offers a « Scale to fit below built-in camera » option that pins the display below the notch permanently. The fans: the real difference against a MacBook Air
Here is what genuinely separates the two lines, and it has nothing to do with the screen. The MacBook Air has no fan: it sheds heat through its chassis. The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro has two. Under a short load, that changes nothing, and TFT is a light load. Over time, a hot Air lowers its clocks to protect itself, and that is when frame stability starts to fray.
- A single game: no perceptible difference, a MacBook Air handles it without flinching.
- Three or four ranked games back to back, in a warm room or on a soft surface that blocks the chassis: that is the fans’ territory.
- TFT plus voice chat, a browser open on stats and a screen recording: the load stops being light, and the Pro holds the pace where the Air slows down.

14 or 16 inches: what actually differs
Between the two sizes, the display technology is identical: mini-LED, ProMotion, the same pixel density. What changes fits in three lines.
- The 14-inch travels: it is the machine you carry, and its screen is more than enough to read eight boards at a glance.
- The 16-inch shows everything bigger, with a larger battery and more cooling headroom. In exchange, your eyes travel further between the shop and the board, which is not an automatic win.

Resolution and scaling: the setting that costs the most
A MacBook Pro display pushes a lot of pixels, and this is the one place where you can hurt yourself unassisted. Two settings stack: macOS scaling, in Settings then Displays, and the resolution assigned to the Android device inside the launcher. Pushing the second to its maximum does not make the game more detailed past a certain point, because TFT’s art is drawn for phone and tablet screens. It does, however, occupy the GPU, generate heat, and cost you runtime.
The sensible setup is to stay on the default macOS scaling and only touch the launcher resolution if the in-game text looks too small to you. Do you need a MacBook Pro to play TFT? No
Let us be blunt, at the risk of disappointing: nobody needs a MacBook Pro to play Teamfight Tactics. Any Apple Silicon MacBook Air runs the game with a keyboard and in full screen, and the rank you earn on it is worth exactly what a PC player’s rank is worth. If the MacBook Pro is already on your desk because work demanded it, TFT benefits without reservation: a higher-contrast board, smoother scrolling, steadier long sessions. Bought for TFT alone, it would be overkill, and the money sits better in an external display or a decent headset.
Does Teamfight Tactics benefit from the MacBook Pro’s 120 Hz?
Visually yes, competitively no. The ProMotion panel in the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro adapts its refresh rate up to 120 Hz, against a fixed 60 Hz on a MacBook Air. You see it when scrolling the shop, when the carousel moves and in interface animations. But TFT is an auto-battler: decisions are taken in seconds and combat resolves on its own, so nobody gains league points because their display draws twice as many frames per second.
Should you buy a MacBook Pro rather than a MacBook Air for TFT?
No. TFT is a light game and any Apple Silicon MacBook Air runs it, with keyboard controls and full screen. The real difference shows up over time: the MacBook Air has no fan, so several games back to back in a warm room eventually make the chip lower its clocks. The MacBook Pro holds that pace, and it also holds TFT alongside a voice call, a browser and a screen recording.
Does the MacBook Pro notch get in the way during a game?
No, it never covers the board. In full screen, macOS hides the menu bar and places the image of non-adapted apps below the camera area: the strip around the notch stays black and the game occupies all the remaining space. Can you still play TFT on a MacBook Pro now that macOS is not supported?
Yes, but not through an official Mac client. Patch 18.1, which opens Set 18 and moves TFT onto Unreal Engine, removes macOS support: no support and no fixes. Riot describes the removal as temporary and says it is working to support the system in a future update, with no date announced. The Android build remains fully supported, and that is what OSFT Launcher runs on Apple Silicon Macs, MacBook Pro included. No account was reset or deleted in the process: progress, rank and purchases stayed tied to the Riot account.
14 or 16 inches for playing TFT?
Both sizes share the same mini-LED panel and the same ProMotion refresh rate, so image quality is identical. The 14-inch is easier to carry, while the 16-inch shows everything bigger, lasts longer on battery and heats up more slowly. Should you raise the launcher resolution on a Retina display?
Rarely. TFT’s art is drawn for phone and tablet screens, so past a certain point raising the resolution assigned to the Android device adds no visible detail while occupying the GPU, heating the machine and cutting battery life. Staying on the default macOS scaling is the better default, and the launcher resolution is worth raising only if in-game text looks too small.
