TFT on Mac on battery: how long it lasts and what drains it

Ranked from the couch, charger still on the desk: sooner or later every Mac player wonders how long a MacBook really lasts through a session of TFT on battery. The good news is that an auto battler is not an action game, and an Apple Silicon machine runs it without emptying itself at speed. You still want to know where the power actually goes, what changes when you plug in, and which settings stretch the evening. One piece of context first: since patch 18.1, TFT no longer supports macOS, and what runs on your Mac is the Android version of the game, served by OSFT Launcher. That happens to help here: it is a build designed for battery-powered devices, and it shows.
What actually drains the battery during a game
The instinct is to blame the game; the steadiest consumer usually sits somewhere else. On a laptop, a screen at full brightness draws power every second of the game and never takes a break between fights. The game’s rendering comes next, in bursts: combat phases, the carousel, shop animations. Everything else is either what runs alongside or what barely registers.
- The screen: brightness is the one dial that matters every second. Dropping it by a third is barely visible indoors and goes straight into battery life.
- Rendering: TFT alternates calm planning and short animated fights, and the power draw follows that rhythm. An auto battler asks far less of the GPU over time than a shooter does.
- The neighbours: a browser full of tabs, an Electron app or a Discord screen share all bill the battery while you play. Live video encoding is the expensive one.
- The network: a game of TFT moves very little data, so Wi-Fi is a rounding error in your battery life.
Plugged in or on battery: what changes on Apple Silicon
On many Windows laptops, unplugging means playing on a slower machine: the graphics chip drops its clocks the moment the charger goes. Apple Silicon Macs do not work that way: performance is the same on battery as on the mains, and a game started plugged in and finished on battery keeps its frame rate. The one exception is deliberate: Low Power Mode, which slows the machine down so it lasts longer. The settings that stretch a session
- 1Lower the screen brightness before touching anything else: it is the most effective lever, and the only one that costs nothing in comfort once the room is a little dim.
- 2Close the browser, or at least the heavy tabs: an ad-filled page animates pixels and occupies the CPU for your whole game.
- 3Stop Discord screen sharing between games: voice costs almost nothing, encoding video does. The rest of our Discord setup next to a game of TFT applies as is.
- 4Turn off the keyboard backlight: a small consumer, but like the screen it works non-stop.
- 5Save Low Power Mode for the break between games: there it stretches the pause nicely; mid-game it can cost frames right as a fight starts.
Is playing plugged in bad for the battery?
No. Staying on the charger through a ranked evening does not wear the battery out: macOS manages the charge, and its optimised charging holds the battery around 80 percent when the machine lives on the mains, finishing the top-up only when it is useful. A battery’s real enemy is heat. Playing while charging produces both at once, which matters most on a fanless MacBook Air: parked on a duvet or in direct sun, it keeps its heat. The practical rule fits in two sentences. For a game or two on the couch, battery is fine: brightness down, browser closed, and the session ends before the battery does. For a proper ranked evening, plug in: the cycles you save beat watching the percentage during a carousel.
Does TFT drain a MacBook battery quickly?

Is a Mac slower in games when it runs on battery?
No. Unlike many Windows laptops, an Apple Silicon Mac keeps the same performance on battery as plugged in. The one exception is Low Power Mode: switched on, it deliberately slows the machine and can cost smoothness in fights.
Does playing plugged in damage a MacBook battery?
No. macOS manages the charge, and its optimised charging avoids keeping the battery pinned at 100 percent. What wears a battery out is heat: play on a hard surface, out of the sun, and the cable will never be the problem.
Is TFT still supported on macOS?
Not natively. Patch 18.1, which moved the game to Unreal Engine for the launch of Set 18, removed macOS support: no support and no fixes. Riot calls the removal temporary and says it is working to support the system in a future update, with no date announced. The Android version remains supported, and that is the one OSFT Launcher runs on a Mac; no account is reset along the way.
Does Low Power Mode help much while playing?
Between games, yes: it stretches the pause noticeably. During a game, it can cost frames right when fights play out. If the session has to last, lower the brightness instead: the saving is comparable and the smoothness does not move.
