The best mobile auto battlers, and what TFT does differently

The genre is younger than a decade, and nobody planned it. In early 2019, a custom Dota 2 map sat eight players around separate boards, handed them a random shop and let the fights resolve on their own. Within months, a mod had turned into a genre with its own standalone games, its own vocabulary and its own habits. Teamfight Tactics is one of those games, and it is the one you meet first when you go looking for the best mobile auto battlers. This article maps the genre rather than a download chart: what all these games share, what TFT does differently, and why this is the genre that gains the most when you move from a phone to a proper screen. From a Dota mod to a genre of its own
The origin story fits in a sentence: a custom map running inside an engine that was never designed for it, with an improvised interface and rules written by a modder. It caught on widely enough that several studios shipped their own game on the same principles within the year, this time with a purpose-built interface and a phone version from day one. The vocabulary survived almost intact. People still talk about pieces, the board, the bench, the shop and rerolls. That is why moving from one auto battler to another takes an hour rather than a week: the controls change, the grammar does not.
The four building blocks every mobile auto battler shares
Whichever game you open, the same four mechanics are waiting. They are not a stylistic convention. Their combination is what produces the kind of decision the genre is built on, where you bet on probability and on money instead of on a sequence of inputs.
- 1A random shop. Each round the game offers you a handful of units drawn from a pool shared with everyone else. You do not choose what you are offered, only what you do with it, and you can pay to ask for a fresh offer.
- 2An economy with interest. Gold you do not spend earns more gold every round. Spending everything makes you strong now and poor later, hoarding costs you fights but builds the endgame. That single trade-off comes back every round in every game of the genre.
- 3Three-of-a-kind merging. Three copies of a unit combine into an upgraded version, and three of those into a third tier. Every purchase is therefore both a board decision and a bet on what the shop will show you later.
- 4Combat that resolves itself. Once the planning phase ends you have no input: units walk, pick targets and hit according to their own rules. What is being tested is what you set up beforehand, not what you do during.
Those four blocks explain why the genre found phones so quickly. Nothing here is decided by reflex: choices happen over seconds during a planning phase, and a touchscreen is perfectly good at dropping a unit and tapping a shop. A shooter loses its substance on a phone; an auto battler does not. It is also what makes the genre approachable for someone who has never touched a strategy game, because there is nothing to execute, only something to decide.
What Teamfight Tactics adds on top of the genre
Every game builds its own layer on those foundations. TFT builds four things, and they are the reason one game rarely looks like the last one.
- Tiered traits. Each unit carries two or three labels that do nothing at all until a threshold is reached: two, four, six units of the same trait fielded together. The effect does not ramp up smoothly, it jumps a step. You build a composition by aiming at breakpoints, not by stacking strong units.
- The carousel. At fixed intervals every player walks onto a shared board where item-carrying units rotate, and grabs one at the same time as everyone else. Entry order favours whoever is doing badly, which gives the genre its only moment of physically meeting your opponents, and a catch-up mechanic with no real equivalent elsewhere.
- Augments. At set rounds you are offered three options, and the one you keep changes a rule of your game for good. It is not a stat bonus, it is a fork that can make you drop the plan you have followed for ten rounds.
- Set rotation. Every few months the units, traits and mechanics are replaced wholesale. That is not a balance patch, it is a knowledge reset: learned compositions stop working and everyone relearns at the same time, which is where our composition tracking starts from.
That last point is the divisive one. When a set ends, a library of knowledge becomes useless, and you have to enjoy relearning to get anything out of it. In exchange, nobody spends years in front of the same solved game, and a returning player does not walk into a community a thousand hours ahead of them. It is a few weeks ahead, same as them.
What other games in the genre chose to do differently
Ranking auto battlers by download charts teaches you very little, and those charts move every month anyway. What actually separates them is three or four design stances, each with its own following.
- Match length. Half an hour is not a law of the genre: some games cut the round count, shrink the board or shorten each phase so a match fits a commute. You lose the long power curve, you gain the ability to stop.
- Deliberate slowness. At the other end, the designs closest to the original map keep the chess vocabulary, a longer planning phase and a rhythm where you think more between fights than you click during them.
- How much the player does during combat. Some games hand a little control back: an ability to trigger, a target to call. That moves them towards conventional strategy games and away from the founding idea, where everything is settled before the fight starts.
- The business model. This is the split with the heaviest consequences. In TFT what is sold is cosmetic: the look of your Little Legend, the arena, the season pass. Nothing on sale places a unit on the board or moves a stat. Other games in the genre sell access to characters or to in-game resources, and the question of whether everyone draws from the same pool gets a different answer there.
That last line deserves a pause, because it decides what you look at during a match. When monetisation stays off the board, a skin is a matter of taste and never a signal of power: seeing a rare Little Legend walk past tells you nothing about the board behind it. When monetisation walks onto the board, every opponent becomes an open question, and the shared pool is no longer quite shared.
Why an auto battler gains more than other games on a big screen
Most mobile games lose something on a desktop screen: an interface built for a thumb simply becomes an oversized interface. Auto battlers do the opposite, for a straightforward reason. They are information games. At any moment there is your board, your bench, your shop, your gold, your items, your active traits, and seven other boards to go and read. On a phone all of that exists, but not at the same time: you open a panel, close it, scroll the opponent list. On a big screen it all sits together, and comparing those things is precisely what the game is.
- Reading everything at once. Watching your shop without taking your eyes off the board, and counting which units your opponents have already taken, is half the decisions in the genre.
- Scouting. On a phone, checking what your neighbour is playing costs several seconds and breaks the thread of your own buying. On a big screen it is a glance and back.
- Repeated actions. Rerolling the shop and buying experience are the two things you do dozens of times a match. One key replaces a run of taps, and the difference shows in the last seconds of a round: our keyboard guide covers how those actions get bound to keys.
- Fine placement. Shifting a unit one hex sideways works better with a pointer than with a finger covering the tile you are aiming at.
Then there is length, which is the most concrete argument of all. A full match runs thirty to forty minutes with the screen on and 3D rendering the whole way, with no idle moments. That is exactly the load profile that drains a phone battery and pushes the device hot enough to throttle itself, usually at the worst possible moment. The Mac case: it is the Android build that runs
One piece of context matters here, because it shapes the answer. Since patch 18.1, the one that opens Set 18 and moves TFT onto Unreal Engine, macOS is no longer supported by the game: no support, no fixes. Riot frames the removal as temporary and says it is working to support the system again in a future update, without announcing a date. No account was reset in the process: progress, rank and purchases stay attached to the Riot account. The same patch also dropped the oldest, lowest-memory Android and iOS handsets. Android itself remains fully supported, and that is the door OSFT Launcher uses: on an Apple Silicon Mac it runs the Android build of the game inside a real virtual Android device, with a keyboard, full screen and GPU rendering. The genre in six lines

What is an auto battler, exactly?
A game where you buy units from a random shop, place them on a board during a planning phase, and then watch the fight resolve on its own with no input from you. The genre appeared in early 2019 as a Dota 2 custom map and broke away into standalone games shortly after. Its defining trait is that you never play during combat: everything that matters was decided before it started.
What do all these games have in common?
Four mechanics that carry across titles. A shop offering units drawn at random from a shared pool, an economy where unspent gold earns interest, a merge that turns three copies of a unit into an upgraded one, and combat that resolves without intervention. Everything else, traits, items, the number of rounds, belongs to each individual game.
What really separates TFT from other auto battlers?
Four design choices. Traits give nothing until a breakpoint, which pushes you to build towards thresholds. The carousel puts every player on a shared board and favours whoever is behind. Augments rewrite a rule of your match at fixed rounds. And set rotation replaces the whole roster every few months, which resets what everyone knows on a regular schedule.
Do you have to pay to be competitive in TFT?
No. What TFT sells is cosmetic: Little Legend skins, arenas, the season pass. No purchase places a unit on the board, moves a statistic or shifts shop odds. This is a clear dividing line inside the genre, because other auto battlers do sell access to characters or to in-game resources.
Why play an auto battler on a big screen rather than a phone?
Because it is a genre where you decide by comparing information. Board, bench, shop and opponent compositions all read at once on a large display, while a phone forces you to open and close panels. macOS is no longer supported by TFT, so how do you play on a Mac?
Patch 18.1, which opens Set 18 and moves the game to Unreal Engine, removed macOS support: no support and no fixes. Riot presents that removal as temporary and says it is working to support the system again in a future update, with no date announced. The same patch also dropped the oldest low-memory Android and iOS devices. Android remains supported, and that is what makes the Mac route work: on Apple Silicon, OSFT Launcher runs the Android build inside a virtual Android device, with keyboard and full screen.
