Playing TFT on a Mac over your phone’s hotspot: what to expect

A game of TFT on the train, at a coffee shop or in an airport lounge, with your Mac riding your phone’s hotspot: the idea is tempting, and then two worries show up. Will it burn through the data plan, and will the game survive the connection? Short answer: the match itself barely uses any data, and everything that downloads around it is what deserves your attention. One thing first, because it frames everything else: since patch 18.1, macOS is no longer supported by Teamfight Tactics. On a Mac, the game runs inside OSFT Launcher, which runs the Android version, the one Riot still updates. A TFT match sends game states, not video
Two families of mobile gaming exist, and they have nothing in common where data is concerned. Cloud gaming receives a continuous video stream: every second on screen comes down from a server, and an hour adds up to gigabytes fast, as we broke down in our cloud gaming article. A game running on your own machine only exchanges commands and game states: what you buy, where your units stand, what the seven opponents are doing. TFT adds a property that works entirely in your favour: it is turn-based, with no aiming and no real-time movement. The traffic during a match is small and, above all, steady: combat causes no spike, because its outcome is computed from a state your Mac already knows.
Measure your own usage once instead of guessing
Rather than trusting a number from a forum thread, measure yours once. It takes five minutes and the answer holds for every future session.
- 1Open Activity Monitor (in Applications, then Utilities) and its Network tab: every app lists its received and sent bytes there.
- 2Note the launcher’s counters, play one full match, then read them again: the difference is your real per-game usage.
- 3On the iPhone, Settings then Cellular shows what Personal Hotspot has served: that is the total your plan sees, launcher and the rest of the Mac combined.
- 4Compare the two: if the phone’s total is far above the game’s share, something else on the Mac is consuming, and the next section tells you what.
The real budget line: downloads around the match
What empties a data plan in an hour is almost never the match: it is the silent downloads. TFT ships a patch roughly every two weeks, and a set change weighs far more than a hotfix: launched at the wrong moment, it lands on your mobile data. macOS and your apps have updates of their own, and iCloud syncs photos and files the moment any connection appears, without telling home Wi-Fi from a tethered phone.
- Open the launcher on home Wi-Fi before leaving: if a game update is waiting, it happens at home, not on the train.
- Turn on Low Data Mode for your phone’s network: System Settings, Wi-Fi, Details next to the hotspot. macOS then holds back automatic updates and background tasks.
- Pause the heavy syncs for the trip: iCloud Photos will catch up on the evening Wi-Fi.
- Close the tabs and apps that refresh themselves: a paused streaming site is still a streaming site.
Set up the hotspot so it survives a session
Personal Hotspot comes in three flavours, and they are not equal for gaming.
- Wi-Fi is the normal route: the iPhone shows up in the Mac’s Wi-Fi menu, with no password to type if both use the same Apple ID. Leave “Maximize Compatibility” off: it moves the hotspot to a slower band meant for old devices, not for you.
- USB, a cable between iPhone and Mac, is the most stable link: immune to interference and distance, and it charges the phone as a bonus. The cost shows up on the Mac’s battery, a trade-off we detailed in our article on battery life during games.
- Bluetooth is slower than both and has no place here.
- Public train or café Wi-Fi is shared with everyone around you, sits behind a captive portal and drops without warning: your own 4G beats it almost every time.
Disconnects: what happens when the signal dies
On mobile data in a moving train, the question is not whether the connection will drop but when: tunnels, dead zones and tower handovers are part of the ride. The good news is that TFT handles a disconnect better than most games: the match keeps running on the server, your board fights with the last saved placement, and the game puts you straight back into the ongoing match as soon as the connection returns.
- A drop of a few seconds costs nothing: at worst you miss a purchase or a repositioning.
- A drop of several minutes hurts: your economy and your shop sit frozen while the other seven players keep playing.
- In ranked, the penalty stacks: stay away too long and you finish wherever your board dies, LP included. Save ranked for stable connections.

Hotspot latency: what TFT forgives, and when
Mobile data adds latency compared to fibre, and above all it adds variable latency: the ping moves from one second to the next with the load on the cell tower. For TFT this is very livable: the game is turn-based, and a command arriving a few dozen milliseconds later changes nothing about a fight that was computed in advance. The only two moments where latency costs you are the carousel, where two players race for the same unit, and the very end of planning, when a last-second repositioning has to land. The checklist before you leave
- 1Open the launcher on home Wi-Fi: any pending update happens there, not on your plan.
- 2Turn on Low Data Mode for the phone’s network in the Mac’s Wi-Fi settings.
- 3Pause iCloud Photos and file syncing for the duration of the trip.
- 4Pack a cable: USB tethering is steadier than Wi-Fi and charges the phone.
- 5Measure one match in Activity Monitor the first time: you will know exactly what your plan absorbs.
- 6Match the mode to the ride: a normal game or Hyper Roll on the train, ranked can wait for a stable connection.
How much mobile data does a TFT game use?
Very little, because the game only exchanges commands and game states, never video. The exact figure depends on mode and length: measure it once at home with the Network tab of Activity Monitor, noting the launcher’s counters before and after a match. Game patches and background syncing are what weigh on a data plan, not the match itself.
Can I still play TFT on a Mac now that macOS is unsupported?
Yes. Patch 18.1, the one that moves the game to Unreal Engine as Set 18 opens, removed macOS support: no more support or fixes for the Mac client. Riot calls the removal temporary and says it is working on bringing the system back, with no date announced. The Android version remains fully supported, and that is the one OSFT Launcher runs on Apple Silicon Macs. Your account, rank and purchases are untouched.
What happens if my connection drops mid-game?
The match keeps running on the server: your board fights with the last saved placement, your economy sits frozen, and the game reconnects you into the ongoing match as soon as the link returns. Is train Wi-Fi good enough for TFT?
Rarely. It is shared with every passenger, sits behind a captive portal and drops whenever coverage does. Your own phone’s hotspot almost always gives a steadier link and a more predictable latency. Public Wi-Fi is fine for big downloads that tolerate interruptions, not for a live match.
Does Personal Hotspot drain the iPhone battery?
Yes, noticeably: the phone keeps both its cellular radio and its Wi-Fi access point running. Two fixes: plug the phone in, or switch tethering to USB, which charges the iPhone from the Mac while giving the most stable link of all. In that case the Mac’s battery pays for everything, so plan accordingly.
Does 4G make TFT lag?
Less than you would think. TFT is turn-based and tolerates far higher latency than a shooter would. The only sensitive moments are the carousel and the last second of the planning phase. If the game stutters on the move, the cause is more often rendering or heat than the network: close whatever runs alongside before blaming the connection.
